Services: Small Business Innovation Research
(SBIR) and the Small Business Technology
Transfer (STTR)

The consultants work closely with local and regional economic
development funding agencies, commercial lenders, Commonwealth
of Pennsylvania funding programs and the U.S. Small Business
Administration funding programs throughout the region. In addition to working
with businesses to obtain funding through normal financing avenues, the
SBDC offers access to alternative funding sources through the Small
Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology
Transfer (STTR) Programs.

The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program

The SBIR program is a highly competitive three-phase award program that
provides qualified small businesses with opportunities to propose innovative
ideas that meet specific research and development needs of the federal
government. Under a set aside program established by the Small Business
Innovation Development Act, federal agencies with extramural R&D budgets
exceeding $100 million annually allocate a percentage of their budgets
exclusively for small businesses.

The Small Business Technology Transfer Program (STTR)

The STTR program fosters innovation necessary to meet the nation's
scientific and technological challenges of the future. The STTR program
requires small businesses to work jointly with a non-profit research
institution, such as federally funded research and development centers
(FFDRCs), universities, and university-affiliated hospitals. Like the SBIR,
the STTR is a three-phase program.
