SBDC Services: Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and the Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR)
Every year, the government offers more than $2.5 billion in small business funding for technology and science innovations. The funding you need to research and develop your innovation is waiting for you, and we can help you access it through the SBIR/STTR programs. We will help you:
- Identify and select agencies and topics that best suit your innovation
- Gather information for your proposal
- Search technical and market literature
- Discuss commercialization considerations
- Review and critique your proposal
- Address contract management issues
- Develop project budgeting
The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program
The SBIR program is a highly competitive three-phase award program that provides qualified small businesses with opportunities to propose innovative ideas that meet specific research and development needs of the federal government. Our region has witnessed a major surge in technology-based companies over the past decade, and the SBIR program plays a major role in helping these companies pursue their innovations. The University of Pittsburgh's Small Business Development Center provides consulting services and educational programs that help your growing company access funding and research assistance through the federal SBIR grant program.
The Small Business Technology Transfer Program (STTR)
The STTR program helps innovators like you to meet the nation's scientific and technological challenges of the future. The STTR program requires small businesses to work jointly with a non-profit research institution, such as a federally funded research and development center, university or university-affiliated hospital. Like the SBIR program, the STTR is a three-phase program.
The Small Business Administration oversees the coordination of the SBIR and STTR programs. Please contact us to discuss your specific questions regarding the program or to register for our next introductory SBIR/STTR workshop.
